The nature of happiness is peace of mind attainable by using our resources of the body, mind and intellect. In addition we can derive strength and inspiration from spirituality. It is a question of making use of the relevant and available knowledge for ensuring happiness. The body is to be kept in the best possible condition so that it remains healthy facilitating right action. The mind has to be kept calm so that it is alert, available and its potential realized to the maximum. The intellect has to be utilized to the maximum and in the right direction. It is definitely possible to attain happiness. Before we make an attempt in this direction it is necessary to understand what we mean by happiness. If it is to mean waves of pleasant experiences then we must be prepared to face sorrow also. The latter is another wave of experience but which causes unhappiness. So it is wise to understand happiness as that feeling which gives us a steady calm mind which we call peace of mind. There is no agitation within. We remain calm even in the worst of provocations and hostile environment.
A person who has cultivated a calm mind is capable of great and extraordinary achievement. The vast reservoir of energy stored in his mind is available for creative and productive purposes. This brings great social benefits. Gandhi was one such individual. He was energy conservator par excellence. He utilized the potential of the human mind to the fullest extent. He practiced frugal living with minimum energy needs. With this he was capable of producing the highest quality of thought. He showed that happiness and simple living could form the basis of sustainability. The examples of Gandhi and Einstein show us clearly that frugal living and simple living can bring us real happiness and help us to live a life of achievement and self-fulfillment.
Let each one of us who are blessed and well off, make a humble beginning by helping at least one individual around us who is in dire need and for whom two meals a day is a luxury. If we succeed the world will be a better place to live for all. There will be universal peace and happiness. Is it not worth striving and attaining?
But one important thing we have to remember. It is human stupidity that is at the root of unhappiness. We must welcome noble thoughts from all sides, gather and use relevant knowledge which will help us to utilize our body, mind and intellect as vital resources. Together with spirituality as a source of strength we must strive hard to reach the goal of attaining a calm mind which is ultimate happiness.
Remember happiness is your birthright. You can discover it, attain it and own it forever. It is up to you to realize or lose. Make the wise choice and live happily.
