Description ▲
This one act play by Jean Anouilh is a tragedy inspired by Greek mythology and the play of the same name (Antigone, by Sophocles) from the fifth century B.C. The play was first performed in Paris in 1944, during the Nazi occupation. It was produced under Nazi censorship, and therefore Anouilh made a play that was ambiguous on purpose- meaning rejection of authority ( Antigone) and the acceptance of authority (Creon). Clever way to avoid censorship but the parallels to the French Resistance and the Nazi occupation are clear
