How ridiculous it seemed that I was going to start speaking as an adult, conducting this interview as if I was a grown-up, when I felt like such a ‘Little’ in here. In fact, when I tried to get the words out of my mouth, my tongue felt thick and numb, like it didn’t want to speak. Finally, tongue-tied with nerves, I simply managed to say: ‘Annie wants play.’

Mr. Howard looked at me for a few moments, his brow knitted together. I thought perhaps he was angry with me, and about to tell me off. But then, his face melted into a small, satisfied smile, and he wrote something down on his clipboard.

‘Annie wants be looked after too,’ I said, fidgeting, aware of how desperate for the toilet I was getting. How long is this thing going to go on for? I hadn’t even seen a bathroom anywhere.

Mr. Howard nodded, wrote something else down, and then looked at me sternly again. ‘Why’s Annie fidgeting so much?’ he asked, seeing me bouncing myself gently up and down on the mat.

And that’s when I knew I was in trouble. Real trouble.
