India’s population has largely crossed 1 billion and by 1035 experts project that India will overtake China as the world’s most populous country. At the same time India already holds first place in another category; the county is home to the world’s largest number of poor people. Today estimated 350 million out of 1 billion Indians fall between the poverty line. This number represents a grim reality; while India claims self-sufficiency in production of grains, two-third of the Indian children under the age of 5 are malnourished. Infant mortality is 65 per 1000 live births, compared with 33 for China. Adult literacy rates of 65 per cent for men and 38 per cent for women fall far short of those in China 90 per cent for men and above 73 per cent for women.
