In 1894 much of the American population lived in rural settings far and there were still no hospitals outside of the big cities. In these times the traveling sawbones was the closest comfort and best hope of the frontier family.
The following pages are the work of one such physician who was well acquainted and trained in the best remedies of his day. He penned the attached pages in hopes of providing comfort to those who would find their homesteads far from cities and towns where doctors such as himself could be found. It was intended to be a self instruction guide and no doubt served that purpose well.
The question then becomes “Of what use is such information today’s modern age?†To many, perhaps not much. To others, however, who strive for self-reliance or perhaps yearn for simpler times before the ubiquitous presence of the innumerable prescription drugs available today; it remains what it was intended to be: a simple guide for home remedies for those who live off the land. I hope as you read this information you both learn something and enjoy the trip back in time to simpler days.
