Description

Being raised on the Coeur d'Alene Indian Reservation and a member of the Villiage of Kotzebue Tribe, I was raised with a very specific view of management. Having managed casinos and people through out my entire adult life I have learned many valuable life lessons that I hope to impart to those who want a few tools to really up their management game.

I am going to start out by telling you the answer to most of the questions I ask today, and that is simply “It depends.” I know some of you will not like that answer, and some of you will want a specific guideline for every situation, but that is not what I am here to give you. There are too many situations you will find yourself in during your time in management for me to give you a set answer, instead I can give you a framework which you can use to find the answers for yourself.

Being a manager is about finding balance. There are people we consider "hard-asses" and "pushovers." A good manager is neither and both. It is about knowing when to let something pass, and when you have to get out your stick. Knowing when to listen, when to speak, when to act, and when to just stand there and let the employee talk.
I will go through these specific areas and topics.
1. "Why is he so mean to me?" The Price of Supervisory Status
2. “How to cross the river” Completing Goals/Problem Solving
3. “The Queens of Drama” Dispute Resolution
4. “Who serves who” Servant Leadership
5. "But I can do it better" Learning to Let Go: Delegation
6. "It's not my Fault" Fix Instead of Blame
7. "Nobody else does it" Leadership: Diversification and Integrity
8. "I know he hears me he just doesn't listen" Personality Tests; communication and motivation of employees
