INTRODUCTION
The prescription is a vital link between the physician and pharmacy personnel.
The prescription states the drug and the dose of that drug the patient must receive. If
the prescription is not properly interpreted, the patient could suffer injury or death.
Therefore, it is necessary for you to understand the different parts of a prescription and
the terminology associated with the prescription.
Prescription Interpretation is the first subcourse in the Pharmacy Specialist
Program. The skills and knowledge you gain from reviewing/studying the material in
this subcourse will serve you as you complete other subcourses and as you work on the
job.
INTRODUCTION
One of the most important areas of study for the pharmacy specialist is
pharmaceutical calculations. A person might know a great deal about pharmacology,
but if he cannot perform a pharmaceutical calculation, that knowledge cannot be applied
in a practical way. To prepare and dispense medications, you must be capable of
performing a variety of pharmaceutical calculations. You must be constantly aware of
one fact-an error made in a dosage calculation can harm a patient. The study of this
subcourse will help give you the knowledge and skill required to perform many types of
dosage calculations.
INTRODUCTION
In the process of achieving and maintaining proficiency in your military
occupational specialty (MOS), you will be learning concepts and performing tasks that
are based on important chemical principles. As you become more proficient with these
principles, you may reach the point where you will not need to give them much
conscious thought. Meanwhile, however, you should study this subcourse to gain a
working knowledge of the fundamental principles of chemistry.
INTRODUCTION
A patient who visits a physician or physician extender frequently receives a
prescription for a medication. That prescription is brought to the pharmacy to be filled.
The patient expects professional attention at the pharmacy. Part of that expectation
involves any caution or warning the patient should heed while taking the medication.
In your role, you will serve as a source of drug information. Patients and friends
will ask you specific questions concerning the use of prescription and over-the-counter
medications. You must know the trade and generic names of literally hundreds of
medications. Furthermore, you must know the cautions and warnings associated with
many agents.

In previous subcourses various topics pertaining to
anatomy, physiology, pathology, and pharmacology were presented. Specifically, topics
like drug references, the physiology of the nervous system, nervous system drugs, and
dermatological agents were introduced.

In this subcourse, MD0807, other systems of the body (for example, the digestive
system) and the drugs used to treat conditions of those systems will be discussed. As
in the other pharmacology subcourses, you will be provided background material in
anatomy, physiology, and pathology in order to help you learn about the specific drugs
discussed in the subcourse.
