Introduction
There have been many books written on success. More are being written at this very minute that I’m writing this book, and there will be even more when you, dear reader, when this book comes into your hands. Why write another one? My answer to that question is only because I believe God sees that the more ways in which people can understand success and share it with others the more opportunities will others have to define it for themselves; that is, they will find out what it means to themselves and not someone else. The well-known author Napoleon Hill spent more than twenty years studying the laws of success at the invitation and encouragement of Andrew Carnegie. At the end of his life-long study, Napoleon Hill presented the results of his hundreds and hundreds of personal interviews with the wealthiest and most successful people of his generation. Among those principles of success, which Napoleon Hill discovered, was definiteness of purpose.
Definiteness of Purpose
Napoleon Hill states his purpose in laying down his success principles for others was
to organize and direct to a definite end the forces of your mind, thus harnessing the stupendous power that most people waste in purposeless thought. (Hill & Pell, 2005,p.126)
Napoleon Hill first says definiteness of purpose has this significant quality among all the other principles he will lay down; that is, it directs to a “definite end the forces of your mind.†Theologians and moral philosophers call this intention, but Hill wants his readers to understand that when a person sets out to accomplish a particular goal in his life he must have a “definite†chief aim. What makes that chief aim more chief than others? It is because when a person selects a chief aim or definiteness of purpose for his thoughts and actions he can “harness†his individual talents and efforts into one consuming desire. If a person has a definite chief aim, does it mean he can have no other aim in life? No! A person can have several chief aims, but caution must be taken for several reasons. First, while a person can have several chief aims, it must be understood that not all aims have the same bearing upon the one chief aim that a person essentially has.
