The Twin Otter Extended by Aerosoft is a comprehensive and immersive add-on aircraft for Flight Simulator X. It’s a fascinating aircraft that is a lot of fun to learn about and fly. It is unlike typical passenger aircraft in many ways and provides the simulator enthusiast with a unique set of systems, engines and handling requirements. The supplied software package lacks an introductory tutorial flight so it can be difficult to know how to begin properly with this bird - and that’s where this instructional guide fits in.
The Tutorial
This enjoyable exercise provides the Twin Otter enthusiast with handling information, speeds, rpm and power settings etc., as well as demonstrating a short sector flight – it’s designed so to seem like you have an instructor on board.
The flight takes place in Washington State, USA, and involves a 42 nm (approx 25 min) flight from Olympia Regional (KOLM) to Bowerman (KHQM) - via Elma (K4W8/4W8) - which is located at the trip mid-point.
The direct legs are: 255° for 21 nm (113.4 OLM VORTAC) to overhead Elma, then 247° for 21 nm to Bowerman.
It's an enjoyable VFR exercise, and the route has navaids that can be tuned allowing some use of the autopilot (AP) for familiarization purposes.
This tutorial will give you the confidence and know-how that you need to have so that you can sit in the captain’s seat and get the best value out of your Twin Otter purchase!
