I hadn’t planned on spending any time with friends back home. I was here to take care of my father’s final bequests, pack up his house and put it on the market. Just a quick week, two at the most if I had to do any work around the house first.
Besides, my father lived in the same small town I grew up in, there was literally no one new to meet.
My father had passed away after a long and vigorous life. He went to bed one night and didn’t wake up the next morning. No pain, no suffering - we should all be so lucky. His funeral was small but a surprising number of people had some very nice things to say about him. I felt bad that I hadn’t spent so much time with him in the past eight years or so. It was tough when we lived on opposite coasts, and I thought I had plenty of time with him.
One good thing to come of all this was that I reunited with my best friend from high school. I had always had an intense crush on him, but nothing ever came of it..
