Bill Walsh was another of the greatest coaches who had a great decade. Walsh’s championship run came in the 1980s when his San Francisco 49ers posted Super Bowl victories in XVI, XIX, and XXIII.
Walsh wanted to play quarterback and he studied the position closely. Unlike most coaches, Walsh liked to size-up players based on capability not necessarily consistent performance. Walsh believed he could teach consistency. After all, a skinny erratic Joe Montana became an NFL super star under Walsh.
Walsh took personal responsibility for practically every slip, foible, and failing of the 49ers. He set the bar very high, very quickly. On the surface, Walsh could exude confidence and cool—standing on the sideline, looking like he walked off a golf course. But Walsh had excelled at boxing when young, and the “Genius†as he was called, was every once the pugilist. In the end, Walsh won three world championships in 10 years and he knew that his Super Bowl record would trump all other measures of success.
Here is the story of one of the greatest coaches in NFL history.
