More and more customers are requiring AS9100 Certification. As customers are stressed on operating costs, favoring suppliers with AS9100 is seen as a cost reduction move. Many customers simply look for an AS91000 Certificate on a supplier’s website and if it’s present, download it and put it in their Supplier’s File. Supplier’s without a third party inspection such as AS9100 require further work, including costly site visits.

The move from ISO to AS should not be difficult, if you have a functioning ISO system currently and your third party audits, (audits giving by your registrar) are relatively good with few findings the upgrade should not be difficult or risky.
The AS9100 Standard is the ISO9000 Standard with additional paragraphs, the AS9100 additional requirements are in bold making them easy to see.
The AS9100 Standard is maintained by a committee of Aerospace companies, such as Boeing, United Technologies, Lockheed Martin, Honeywell, and General Electric for a total of 16 members. These are the Americas companies; similar companies make up the European and Asian groups.
The AS9100 is published and copyrighted by the SAE, Society of Automotive Engineers. The standard is copyrighted and must be purchased. The proceeds from the sale of the standard help maintain the effort and ongoing research into more effective Quality Management Systems.
There are other AS Standards, such as AS9101 which is the standard on how auditors assess your Quality Management System to the AS9100 standard. How you are to be assessed and how you are scored is quite important.
