1745.
Fortress Louisbourg, Ile Royale, part of New France, is under siege by the British.
This French colony later became part of Canada.
A soldier meets an untimely end – but before he dies, he finds himself inside a familiar yet altogether strange house, somehow changed.
1992.
Jacques Lartigue, a re-enactor at the Fortress, stumbles upon a uniformed corpse at the bottom of a staircase.
The medical examiner discovers small round projectiles from the 18th Century during their autopsy. Nobody can explain the mystery.
2002, New York City.
Matthew Lambert, a doctoral music student at Columbia University and former air force pilot, sets off on a journey to learn more about early French music. In North America.
But when he arrives at Fortress Louisbourg, he finds that something is amiss.
Having flashes of déjà vu, he encounters a beautiful young woman with an archaic French accent, an actor in the reconstructed fortress. She is extraordinarily well-versed in the history of the fortress, but offers no explanation.
When Matt launches his own private investigation, he stumbles upon a mystery with no possible or logical rationale.
The woman, Sandrine, is not from 2002. She is from the year 1755.
And the fortress that he stands in occupies both points in time simultaneously.
He has discovered a Portal to the Past.
Daring to venture into the unknown annals of history, Matt and Sandrine place their fates in the hands of an incomprehensible enigma.
And when Sandrine’s 1755 father tells Matt of the ailing of his beloved wife back in Saint-Malo, France, Matt realises that he must use this time-travelling portal to save her with modern medicine.
But there is only one problem: the gargantuan gulf of the Atlantic Ocean with its 18th- century natural and human dangers that lies in front of them.
What follows is an adventurous endeavour, as Matt and Sandrine risk their lives and set sail in the hope of reaching the dying woman in time.
Will they be able to save her?
How can Matt succeed without altering the past beyond repair?
And the climax would bewilder the Wright Brothers!
