Chapter 12
Mad King Wiggy
Marseille, France
Hole 11
Lexi the Score Keeper announced the hole's statistics for the growing gallery, "The hole is five hundred and ninety yards long as the crow flies. It is a par 4 as if the two sections of the hole were directly connected instead of being on two separate mountains."
Dixie giggled at that factoid and then she said, "This picturesque first hole of King Wiggy's is just the beginning of his legendary course. Any fanatic or totally inept golfer could finish this hole in two over par. By the way, the rumor is totally false that the king once hurled himself over the precipice after missing four putts."
The tee being near the rear patio of the castle overlooked a vast vista of mountains. The tee off area was thirty feet wide with a downward slope to the fairway. The fleet of airships was anchored nearby for the players and gallery to ride on.
On the grassy mountainside, the main thoroughfare was also thirty feet wide. Yet the three hundred yard length was bisected by a cleft in the mountain. The great gap was over five hundred feet deep. It was an easy chip from one side of the precipice to the other. Yet the incredible height made the simple shot dizzying and difficult.
On the very large green, the players stayed as close as could be. The gallery huddled near their private airship. The natives feared the worst but prayed for the best.
The slanted mountaintop brought lip-biting frustration to the players. The entire surface was on an angle of 30 degrees. The pin was placed in the upper right quadrant of the green. The men knew that any missed shot was probably going to roll down the hill to the lower side.
There was no fence or safety barrier around the green. One wrong move or one misstep would lead to sudden flight without a parachute. Death was the most probable prognosis for the unlucky soul.
