Will a DARPA project, a CIA ship and a 500 year old prophesy join forces to point the United States into the future of naval warfare?
Is it destiny or luck, fate or chance that has pushed America to the forefront of current technology and military preeminence in the latter half of the 20th century? Is it our destiny to lead in the future, or has our luck run out?
Was it destiny or chance that the American aircraft found Admiral Yamamoto’s plane in hundreds of thousands of square miles of the South Pacific? This interception was the most fateful one for the Japanese.
Even with knowledge gained from the broken codes, the odds of finding him were long. Had either his plane or the attackers been five miles per hour slower or left ten minutes later, the interception would be missed. A few miles less before turning the slight dogleg in the flight plan and the American radar screens would have been blank A tail wind, head wind or no wind at all. Any could have tipped the scales the other direction, changing the war in the Pacific forever. With his death, Admiral Yamamoto's dreams of a submerged attack aircraft carrier were dashed, sealing Japan’s fate while ensuring ours as a world leader.
On occasion, it’s an old forgotten technology that promises to change naval warfare when rediscovered. New materials, techniques and weapons mean its practicality has at last arrived.
"While working on the DARPA's Carrier Survivability Task Force," Lieutenant Commander Kathryn Morris said, "I noticed an odd fact. The Imperial Japanese Navy of World War Two was the only service to ever actually attempt to use Aircraft Carrying Submarines as a true strike force!"
Sometimes you’re traveling down a road on an exciting adventure as the truth is revealed. Your world is shattered and from its shards your future and that of an entire country arise.
“Good Afternoon, I’m your host Raul Santos. Welcome to this special edition of ‘Today’s Costa Rica’. This is a momentous date in Costa Rican history.†The image changes to a slightly out of focus still image of a woman weeping over a dead man, his head in her lap.
“Today is the five year anniversary of the opening of the ‘Time of the Widow’. It was on that day our nation’s true destiny was revealed.â€
“Sadly, as The Prophesy requires, the Time of Widow begins with a dark event. The ambush of our brave National Guardsmen by bandits associated with Armando Juarez, the former Nicaraguan revolutionary turned bandit.†A still of the carnage on the highway fills the screen.
“That dark event led to the most momentous time in our history since Christopher Columbus landed in 1502.†He opens his arms expansively and says, “‘The Time of The Widow’…â€
“For any who may not know the Prophesy of the Widow of Death,†it is a fable from the beginnings of Costa Rica, 500 years ago…â€
Once in a while, you are diverted and end up just where you need to be. Is it your role in destiny, or a simple coincidence that worked out?
“What about you? Everything OK here?†He asks with obvious concern. “You’re platform seems a bit weapons heavy to me for a listening post and light for a defensible position, doesn’t it?â€â€¦
“Sirs,†Able addresses his superiors, “if they’re going to serve as Stealth Armed Listening Post (SALP), they are going to need real armor and more firepower, in case it hits the fan.â€
“Admiral, we could set them up with a couple of camouflaged 76mm high speed guns. I was also thinking there’s room in this bay for two or three Harriers. I don’t think we can give up any pilots, but in two, three months, we could certify a few. I’ll assume the CIA can find pilots.â€
Is it our destiny to be masters of this new 'old' technology? Or will we watch others take this opportunity to become masters of the oceans for the foreseeable future?
“To assume no one appears to be pursuing this technology is hubris and invites disaster. Radar and ICBMs are two projects in which we were behind.
