Introduction
French pronunciation
According to French dictionaries and textbooks on French pronunciation, 26 letters, 16 vocalic sounds and 17 consonantal sounds are what you need to memorize in order to be able to read and write syllables with confidence.
After personally verifying this information by analyzing the small building blocks of many French words, I was surprised to discover that for mastering French pronunciation correctly, FSL and FFL students need to memorize 39 letters, 35 vocalic sounds and 42 consonantal sounds in all!
