The fortress is where I died, where I was born. Where my memories were taken and my body reforged into a new being, a perfect being.

They taught me how to shoot, how to fight. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t know these things. They shaved my head and gave me pills, they gave me the same clothes as everybody else, they taught me how to pick locks and break codes. They taught me so many languages I can’t remember which one is my mother tongue. They taught me how to pick out a target in a crowd, how to memorise a thousand and one faces, how to protect myself from gunfire, how to become invisible in a city of strangers.

They taught me and now they will let me go. These are my last thoughts, the last thoughts of whoever I was. They are watching me write them and they will watch me burn them. And then they will take my oath, feed me some more pills and arm me. Tomorrow or the next day, or the day after or the day after that, I will go to war. Nobody else will know the war is on, but it cannot be avoided. It is coming and I shall meet it with calm.
