If you downloaded this workbook, it is no doubt that you are experiencing a great deal of pain and confusion in your life due to childhood trauma. Most people don't realize that their anxiety and stress from today is often times related to the experiences that they have had in the past. They have learned triggers along the way that have made them anxious and fearful. Or they come across certain memories of humiliation or shame that cause angry and aggressive reactions.
Complex trauma is a very serious disorder. It can paralyze and incapacitate someone from ever moving forward in their life. It can cut their life short by suicide, or they may be so fearful that they are never able to achieve all of the things that they wanted to achieve. People with complex trauma, broken childhoods, or complex PTSD often feel as though they were robbed of the like that they truly wanted to live.
Childhood trauma can cause a great deal of personality disorders, mental and physical illnesses long into adulthood. Many people don't look back at their childhood. They figure that what was done is done, and that they cannot change anything. While you may not be able to change the things that happened in your childhood, you can be assured that they will continue to haunt you in some way until you make a choice to deal with the trauma head-on.
In PTSD and Complex PTSD, the brain keeps bringing forward an issue over and over in the form of dreams and flashbacks. The brain does this in order to process what occurred, and to teach itself to make better decisions in the future. This is a protective measure that your brain goes through so that you learn from your past mistakes. Denying the brain this ability to reprocess what you have been through is like stopping its natural learning from happening.
If you wonder why you continue to choose the same ways that you have in the past, it is largely because you have not allowed your brain to go through this natural learning and you have not tackled your Complex-PTSD symptoms in a meaningful way. A workbook or a therapist can help to expose you to the same memories over and over, so that the brain has a chance to learn better ways to look at the problem and more ways to avoid mistakes down the road.
