Description

In order for low-level ESL learners to develop academic writing skills, one of the most significant things to consider is to have a solid connection between the reading text and the writing task. This textbook chapter incorporates various second language composition theories such as schema theory, corrective feedback, and minimizing grammar instruction that promote students’ learning outcomes. This writing textbook chapter is designed for low-intermediate college ESL students. The chapter is basically divided into two parts: reading and writing. The reading section begins with pre-reading questions that are directly connected to the writing task. The reading text is adapted from a CNN news article that is about a Kenyan boy whose brilliant idea helped the community coexist with lions. In the writing section, the focus moves on to writing an effect essay through connecting the reading text to the writing task. Additionally, conjunctive adverbs of effect are introduced for learners to link ideas within the essay. Furthermore, an assessment rubric that covers global and local issues is included in the chapter. Thus, this textbook chapter will provide the ESL educators with innovative ideas of teaching ESL learners how to write an effect essay.
