Hiram Martin Chittenden (1858–1917) was a leading historian of the American West, especially the fur trade. A graduate of West Point, he was the Seattle district engineer for the Army Corps of Engineers.
The author is an army engineer officer, whose professional career was largely passed in the trans-Mississippi country, and he has visited nearly every section which was frequented by American traders. Captain Chittenden has exploited original materials, many of which have never been printed. Among these are the records of fur companies, the early correspondence of fur traders, journals of expeditions, and the records of steamboat voyages.
In this short book the author gives an account of the legendary mountain man Hugh Glass (1783 – 1833) who was a frontiersman, fur trapper, fur trader, hunter, and explorer.
The life of Glass has been adapted into two feature-length films: Man in the Wilderness (1971) and The Revenant (2015), in the latter of which, Glass was portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio in a performance that earned him an Academy Award, BAFTA and a Golden Globe.
This book's account of Hugh Glass by a widely respected historian offers an authentic view of Hugh Glass, which may be different from that portrayed in the Hollywood versions.
