Cerebral ischemia e-chart - Quick reference guide
Cerebral ischemia (ischemic cerebrovascular accident) occurs when supply of blood to the brain or part of the brain decreases or is interrupted. The most frequent cause is obstruction of the arteries of the brain due to an embolus (clot of any origin traveling through the bloodstream), which generally originates in atheromatous plaques of the carotid artery, or either due to emboli that start in the cardiac cavities as the result of an atrial fibrillation.
