Androids have been declared legal once more after a failed uprising decades ago, returning to design and build the colossal machines needed to control a rapidly deteriorating climate. Not everyone is pleased to see them back.

Interpol Agent E. John Hammell is a man without purpose, his profession made obsolete by an AI-controlled surveillance network with a near-perfect conviction rate. But as Hammell waits to be fired, a horrific crime occurs, the like of which has not been seen for years. The machines’ apparent reluctance to catch the perpetrators reawakens Hammell’s investigator instincts.

Has The Red King, a semi-mythical crime lord believed dead, somehow returned? Have the police force’s androids been compromised? Can a solitary man really compete against an all-seeing network of cameras, sensors and satellites, run by a supercomputer?

As the mystery deepens, twists and turns abound. The more Hammell discovers, the more he finds himself questioning whether his city is becoming better suited to machines than people. He dreams of escaping the heat and oppression of a world improving too quickly around him. He dreams of making a new life on a planet unspoiled by man or machine. He dreams of Abaddon.
