Throughout this book I will explain how everyone can protect themselves online by just taking a little bit more care before making any purchases or sending any private information across the internet.

It can be applied to any situation, whether at home, school, college, work, airports or in a coffee shop checking email on free wifi.

For the benefit of everyone reading this book, I’m going to start off by assuming you have either not got a lot of computer experience. If you do have a lot of experience, or you work in IT, it’s never a bad idea to revisit some of the basics.

Viruses and hacking are mostly avoidable and it doesn’t cost anything to protect yourself, apart from investing in a good antivirus. (There’ll be more about which antivirus you should be using later in this book.)

For readers who don’t have a lot of computer experience I’m going to over some really basic security steps first before we get started on a little more in depth security practices.

If you have a lot of computer experience and just want a bit of a refresher on security practices, then it’s perfect for you as well. Security can change a lot in the course of a few years and it’s always a good idea to stay up to date.

And remember, if security basics aren’t taken care of first, then you may as well place a sign post outside your house telling everyone the doors are unlocked and inviting anyone to come inside who wants to steal your belongings.
