Anka learns when he is eighteen that he has been a part of a program from a foreign planet in order to learn more about Earth. While he seems to be a teenager living a normal life, he is actually from the planet Pern. He is expected to come back to Pern and become a minister to the planet he was raised on. He is taken under Marla’s wing when he gets to Pern, and she shows him the ropes. Pernese don’t feel emotions like humans. They feel it is humans’ greatest weakness. Only, there is a problem. Marla begins to feel. She falls hopelessly in love with Anka. But as Anka has so fully assimilated into Pernese culture, will he return her feelings?

EXCERPT FROM BOOK
“Now we have a lot to cover, so let’s get started. I suppose the best place to begin is why you are here. You have always been meant to return here after seventeen years. You were brought to Earth when you were a year old to become an ambassador to and historian of Earth for Pern. You are a part of a program that gives babies to humans as gifts and then takes them back when they are of age, using them for the information they have learned.”
“That’s terrible,” Anka said.
“Yes well we didn’t quite realize how humans would feel about this at the time the project was started. There have been a few issues. Some parents...like yours, have gotten fairly attached to the Pernese children and don’t exactly want to give them back.”
“And you didn't’ know that was going to happen?”
“The Pernese are a different sort of creature than humans who inhabit the earth.”
“We look the same to me,” Anka said rather obviously. “What’s the difference other than the fact that we’re green?”
“There is a biological difference. For instance, emotional spectrums are vastly different. You may have noticed that your parents are endlessly hyperbolic in regards to how they feel about you. They are not being hyperbolic. They actually feel that way.”
“Wow,” Anka said. “I never knew that. But I’m fond of them as well.”
“Yes well, we have found that Bernese who come out of this program are a tad different from the rest of us. There seems to be some kind of effect. You become a bit more like them from growing up with them. Of course, you are Bernese at heart, so you will adapt. Although, as I told you, you won’t be kept from them. You will be able to go back and see them.”
“Doesn’t the fact that we are affected kind of change your theory about differences in biology? Doesn’t it mean we can change?” he said. “With all due respect of course.”
