Jessie graduates from the eighth grade but there is no high school in Mojave. She can go to high school in another town 130 miles away and could work in exchange for room and board there, but her father won’t let her go. He insists that further education is malarkey and insists that she work with her mother all day, every day, in the kitchen of the family diner. Jessie figures that one possible path to freedom is to sneak aboard a borax wagon headed for Death Valley.
