Marion Castle: The Haunting of Isabel Fleming

During the times, of the early 1800's, when slaves were just arriving into Kentucky. A family of seven worked hard for their freedom. They were the Flemings. They did not choose a life, such as this. The conditions of those times were extreme and harsh. They experienced cruelty and unimaginable pain. Working in fields under drudgery conditions, overtook their lives. Beatings and torture is what they witnessed. Rape and abuse flooded their memories.

A man and woman, after spending ten years on a plantation and having five children, struggled, fought and ran for their freedom. Their freedom was to save the lives of their children.

They did not take on the plantation owners’ last name, they took on a name that they heard and built around their family's history and legacy.

They followed the Underground Railroad and traveled north, as far as, the ward in Marion County, Indiana. They resided in and restored an old plantation, with three large homes on the property. The county records department gave Mr. Fleming the deed; after all of the people of the ward, decided against occupying the land. There were tall tales that surrounded the property, which led to its vacancy.
