This TBook featuring a selection of stories, reviews and interviews from The New York Times archives chronicles the life of Carrie Fisher, who died on Dec. 27, 2016, in Los Angeles at age 60 following a heart attack. Ms. Fisher, who first gained fame at age 19 playing the role of Princess Leia in Star Wars, was also a successful writer. Her semi-autobiographical novel Postcards From the Edge, which became a movie starring Meryl Streep, was nominated for two Academy Awards. Throughout her career, Ms. Fisher was noted for her irreverent wit, outspokenness, and battles with addiction and mental illness. A child of Hollywood, she was the daughter of famous parents, the actress Debbie Reynolds and the singer Eddie Fisher, who had an affair with Elizabeth Taylor that led to a scandalous divorce. Over the years Ms. Fisher and her mother grew very close. The day after Ms. Fisher s death, Ms.Reynolds died of a stroke though many people said it was more likely a broken heart.
