George Washington and his little hatchet, Horatius at the bridge, the sword of Damocles- these and similar tales of excitement, adventure, courage, and integrity have been popular with children for nearly as long as they have existed. They still have the power to influence and inspire young readers (and listeners). These 'great tales of a heroic age' (Charlotte Mason) find their way into children's hearts and minds, and work their way out again in ideas and character growth.
Our copy includes the tales that we recommend for use in AmblesideOnline's free online curriculum. We have ever so slightly edited some of them for clarity. We have included a different, and we believe better told, account of William Tell. We created our own combined version of Maximillian and the Gooseherd (if you haven't heard of that one, you are not alone, but it deserves to be remembered).
God bless you and your children in the reading of these classic tales, and may they inspire you as they have inspired others for generations.
