Kenleigh Nguyen-Peters is a Blasian beauty who sees the good in everyone, is a Criminal Justice major with hopes of becoming the most sought out Private Investigator on her side of the Mississippi. Being raised by her father's twin brother and his wife, she's on a quest for clues to unanswered questions about her father's death and her mother's disappearance.

Struck by tragedy at a young age, Jawaine Franklin-Li, a young black man, was raised in the suburbs by his mother's best friend, Huang Li. After he'd buried his mom and had become a ward of the state, Huang felt responsible for his upbringing and stepped in to adopt him. Jawaine watches from the sidelines as Kenleigh falls for the wrong guy. Although it hurts for him to watch, he sticks by her side to wipe her tears and mend her broken heart, because that's what best friends do.

After they graduate college and go their separate ways, fate has it that their two ships pass in the night, ending up at the same dock.
