Stylistic Harmony (Oxford Music Examination Workbooks)

This book outlines the main features of musical style between 1550 and 1850. The product of many years of teaching experience has been gathered into book form in response to the relatively recent demand of most bodies examining in music for GCE "A" level, for entrance to University or (Music) College, or for Diplomas, that the student be able to demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of a variety of harmonic styles. It is therefore suitable for use with sixth-formers, students at Colleges of Further Education (for whom it was originally written), and others preparing for such examinations. As this book was intended to provide systematic exposure to the styles covered in examination syllabuses, it is presented as a chronological course of study, with, at every stage, examples and exercises sufficient for a two-year course. Teachers may none the less prefer to dip into certain sections in conjunction with their own harmony courses. Greatest weight has been given to those chapters dealing with the Baroque and Classical periods, since these are basic areas of harmonic technique and experience.
