The book begins with a brilliantly evocative essay by Anthony Burgess, which strikingly recreates the Grand Tour experience, and a brief but penetrating article on eighteenth-century art by Francis Haskell. The book includes sixteen full-page colour plates and four facsimile views by Piranesi and Zocchi, magnificent examples of the painters' and the engravers' art, all superbly reproduced with sensitive accuracy.
