More than 2,000 people in eight countries have had a hand in the preparation of The Quaker Tapestry, which sprang from the inspiration of one woman and a boy in a country Friends' Meeting in England in 1981, using as its model the famous Bayeux Tapestry.
The Quaker Tapestry is a celebration of the three hundred years' experience and the spiritual insights of the Religious Society of Friends (known as Quakers). Those who are familiar with the Quakers will know of their record in the relief of suffering in wars and natural calamities, and of their share in the anti-slavery movement and social and educational progress. Only those who know them very well will be prepared for the breadth of Quaker experience in "following the leadings of Truth"; of the fascinating incidents and personalities involved; of their share in industry and science as well as movements of social protest and peace witness; and of the form of "silent waiting upon God" from which these things derive.
The book is not a brief history of Quakerism nor a work of propaganda, but an extended commentary and reverie on the 75 facets of the panels, whose subjects were chosen and lovingly illustrated by those who worked them under expert advice: an attempt in an unusual form to communicate and share.
Ann Wynn-Wilson has written an introduction in which she describes her conception of the Quaker Tapestry project and the making of the Tapestry. She was responsible for designing a new embroidery technique which made possible this international, co-operative project for both skilled and unskilled workers.
