After all, computer scientists are in the business of inventing software and hardware, and the only way to learn inventing is to invent -- over and over again. So, while some of the computer science can be learned in the classroom or by reading books, most of it is learned during long hours of tinkering with the machinery. This manual is intended to provide some guidance during those long hours. It provides hands-on, step-by-step guidance through the experimentation required during a first course in computer science, running parallel to the Structures and Abstractions textbook. The labs provide much of the help that might be expected from a lab assistance, leading students through the first steps in running an operating system and Pascal environment, learning the syntax of the Pascal language, and solving problems of increasing complexity.
