Description

Cleopatra's Daughter: A Novel by Michelle Moran is a colourful tale of one of history's greatest love epics, Marc Antony and Cleopatra and the aftermath of their union, particularly of their daughter Selene.

The union of Cleopatra and Marc Antony is one filled unbridled passion, but with dire political and personal consequences. The lovers are hunted by the vengeful Octavian and as a result he invades Egypt. The pair decides to die on their own terms, orphaning their three children. The children are immediately captured, chained and transported back to Rome, but sadly only two survive: The twins Alexander and Selene. The siblings are dispensed into the household of Octavian's sister. The siblings desperately cling to the hope that one day soon they will return to their homeland in Egypt.

The tale is recounted in a narrative by Selene, who introduces readers to an intriguing cast of historical characters such as Cleopatra Mark Antony Octavian Livia, his jealous wife Octavia, the emperor's compassionate sister Marcellus, a handsome yet flirtatious fellow who is the heir to the Roman throne Tiberius, the other son of the Emperor and Juba, Octavian's aide whose command has a far - reaching impact on the lives of Selene and Alexander. Selene's narrative draws readers' attention to the concerns of a young woman of that era, such as finding love, being caught between family and love and pursuing her own talents and interests. It also provides readers with colourful historical details, which capture both the glory and horror of those times. Readers will get an opportunity to feel what it's like to dine with royalty, to witness the creation of the Pantheon, traverse through Rome's marketplace and encounter illustrious politicians and poets.
