Description

The present chronology is an attempt to provide readers with information which will increase their basic understanding of the persons and events that have left a lasting influence upon the development of the history of Koreans in America. The work, which is not intended to be exhaustive, addresses the early migration of Koreans to the Hawaiian Islands, where they came as laborers for the sugar plantations, to their subsequent settlings, in increasingly heavier numbers, in the Continental United States. The documents attached here are basically from two different sources. First, Editor Kim has made an attempt to provide readers with documents relating to the people who were responsible for the emigration of Koreans to America. Second, he has selected documents which were written by Korean immigrants, the majority of whom were first-generation Koreans. Also included is a previously unpublished paper by Kim entitled "History and Role of the Church in the Korean American Community." A bibliographical guide to the existing literature on the topic of Koreans in America is appended at the end.
