Tess Durbeyfield is the eldest daughter of John, who is a poor man living in a village of Wessex. One fine day, John finds out that he is the descendant of a rich noble family named the d’Urbervilles. As this sudden change nearly overcomes her, Tess falls in love with a man named Angel, whom she sees at a local fair. To make her life happy and fortunate, John sends Tess to the d’Urbervilles, who turn out to be falsely using the illustrious last name without actually being the real d’Urbervilles. Tess isn’t left with any other option but to take up small jobs in their house. Alec, the son of the d’Urbervilles’ family, looks at Tess and decides that he wants to have her. After some failed attempts, Alec is able to take advantage of Tess, leaving her no option but to return home to give birth to Alec’s baby and to deal with the bad name and reputation that she has been branded with.
Her life takes a positive turn after she takes up the job of a milkmaid, where she sees Angel again. Both of them decide to get married but Tess has a hidden past. She could lose Angel if she revealed the truth about herself. On the other hand, she is constantly worried about whether she will ever encounter Alec again. The third edition of Tess Of The D'Urbervilles 3e (NCE) (Norton Critical Editions) was published by W W Norton & Company in 1991 in paperback.
