Gaming and Gambling in East Asia

Both gaming and gambling have been thriving in East Asia, and despite moral and legal sanctions, plans for the development of casinos and other gambling facilities are in place or being discussed in a number of East Asian countries. This book explores the social, cultural, historical and economic dimensions of gaming and gambling in contemporary East Asia. Drawing on multidisciplinary research on gaming and gambling activities in Japan, China (including Hong Kong, Macau and Tibet), Taiwan, and Korea, it provide a survey of contemporary forms of gaming and gambling across East Asia and examines the local and regional dimensions of the activities in the region. Chapters also focus on the wider theoretical issues related to the changing image of gaming and gambling in society, such as the relationship between participation in the activity and social parameters such as age, gender and class.
