A Political Economy Analysis of China's Civil Aviation Industry (East Asia: History, Politics, Sociology and Culture)

The main purpose of this study is to break the Chinese civil aviation industry up into its most important parts and examine how these parts interact in determining how the industry functions in the contemporary period. With reform in the industry, new factors, or variables, entered the scene and a more diverse and plural environment gradually emerged. The study seeks to explain this more complex and diverse environment by identifying the most important variables present within the industry and grouping them under the headings of marketisation, destatisation (or quasi-privatisation), decentralisation and globalisation. Through an analysis of these new dynamic forces for change, the book provides a new interpretation of the role and effectiveness of the state and the policy process in contemporary Chinese political economy. Together with the fresh empirical information about civil aviation contained in the study, these features will appeal to a broad range of China watchers.
