Maud Bryt, photographer and author, is a woman whose family members--for three generations before her--were midwives in Holland. In addition to the lovely black-and-white photographs of babies and parents, Bryt shares her mother Oma's suggestions for baby care, sleeping, feeding, bathing, illness, sibling interaction, family outings, and introducing your baby to the world. The tips tend to be one-dimensional (for example, Oma has specific ideas about how to get a baby to sleep, allowing no leeway for parental differences of opinion), but on the whole this book is sensible and certainly a joy to browse. --Ericka Lutz
