Description
In 1873 Catherine Currie, her husband and their first child took up an uncleared pioneer selection in the forests of west Gippsland.
The daily life of hard physical work was punctuated by the births of children and the arrival of neighbours, and gradually the unforgiving forest was transformed into productive land. All this Catherine recorded faithfully in her diary. But, as the years wore on, her early optimism turned to disillusionment and sometimes to despair, and the diary became a moving private confessional.
This is a simple and moving story, bringing us into direct, vivid and personal contact with Catherine Currie. It is also a superb study in both autobiography and biography. Above all, it will give great pleasure to those many readers who delight in the subtlety of plain English.
