Don't Be Afraid: The Firefighter and EMT

Don't Be Afraid is a children's book that helps educate children about Firefighters and EMT's. It was written by a New York State EMT, and contains 2 short stories. One about a little boy who is in a house when he hears his fire alarm go off. The boy goes to escape the house, when he hears a noise coming from downstairs. Instead of leaving the house, the boy turns around and hides thinking the noise was a monster. He is soon after greeted by a firefighter who takes him to safety and reunites him with his family. He learns what a firefighter looks and sounds like, and learns that you should never hide when in a building that is on fire. The second story is about a little girl that falls from the monkey bars at school, and hurts her arm. The teacher calls 911 and the ambulance comes to her rescue. The EMT's bring out some scary looking equipment, like a backboard and a stretcher. At first the little girl is very scared worried. But she soon finds out that the EMT are there to help her, and get her to the hospital safely. This book is highly recommended for any elementary aged child. It is an easy read for parents and children as well. The goal of this book was to better educate children of what to expect, and how to behave when confronted with an emergency situation.
