Semigroups, Theory and Applications: v. 1 (Pitman Research Notes in Mathematics Series)

This volume arises from the Autumn Course on Semigroups, Theory and Applications held at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, Italy, from November to December 1984. The directors of the course were Professors H Brezis, M G Crandall and F Kappel. The aim was to introduce the theory of semigroups and evolution equations, to survey part of the current related knowledge, to draw attention to research problems and to show how to use the abstract results in practical questions related to partial and functional differential equations. The course was divided into two parts. This volume contains the contributions from the final week, which had the character of a conference on evolution problems. A further volume in the Research Notes series will contain a representative part of the lectures presented during the first four weeks of the course.
