In the 1980s, tobacco was king. Although the Surgeon Generals report clearly listed the many harmful effects of cigarette smoking, the tobacco industry stood firm in its stance that there was no verifiable evidence that cigarette smoking was harmful to smokers and certainly not to nonsmokers. Smoking was permitted in all public placeseven hospitals. It was glamorized in the entertainment world and the millions spent on advertisement to encourage the trend.
