October 31, 1855. Celebrated author and social champion Victor Hugo, in exile from France, is forced to relocate to the Isle of Guernsey. En route across the Channel, the trunk containing his unfinished masterpiece, Les Misérables, is lost overboard! But fate deals him a strange blow as he begins to recreate the book with the help of the very people he was destined to immortalize, and he discovers what really happened after the night the barricades fell over twenty years before....
