The Dark Side of Beauty

Victoria Ingram is a beautiful, but troubled girl. Plagued by missing childhood memories, she struggles to learn the origin of her imaginary playmate: a younger version of herself. Skipper, as she comes to be known, is the only one who knows how Victoria lost her virginity. As troubling as Victoria's past may be, it pales when compared to her home life. Abandoned by her father, Victoria bears the brunt of her mother's abuse in a state of increasing despair. When her mother's boyfriend threatens to rape her, she attempts--unsuccessfully--to take her own life. Desperate to escape further molestations, she runs away from home.

On the way to L.A., Victoria is befriended by Alice, a young woman who warns her about the dangers of life on the street. Frightened by Alice's words, Victoria eagerly accepts when she is offered a place to stay. When she meets Alice's roommate, Joan, she is forced to confront an aspect of her personality that she never knew existed. Victoria soon discovers the truth behind Alice's warning: never trust anyone; for her benefactors have a secret agenda that not only challenges Victoria's ability to survive, but her will to survive, as well.
