Looking for Signs: Stories

Set in New York City, coastal New England, taxi cabs, urban kitchens, and under the wind-stirred awnings of outdoor cafés, the twelve stories of Looking for Signs evoke a landscape of both euphoria and survival.

A young woman seeks solace in a coastal town, only to lose all direction there. A ninety-three-year-old woman struggles with the loss of her son while finding friendship with her downstairs neighbor, who also struggles with loss. An eleven-year-old girl begins to face the claims of adulthood while trying to cope with the emotional absence of her mother. A couple’s disintegrating marriage causes shifts in the friendships around it.

These stories give us insight into characters who live complex interior lives with intuitive artistry and a deep, sustaining connection to the natural world.
