INSERT FROM BOOK: Boy, what a shock it was at Darnell s daughter s funeral for everyone. They read the obituary in church with the verbal adjustment of adding Darnell and I to the program. It said Mr. and Mrs. Darnell Cox III were present. After the gasps and silence, came the stares. Darnell was engaged to the child s mother, Carman. Neither Carman nor her family or friends knew we were married. He was the child s father so it was not an issue of which car we would ride in. We would ride in the family car. It was quite an awkward moment though because Carman also had a guy friend she had been dating. She had not heard from Darnell and grew tired of waiting for him, so she began seeing other people, Darnell told me. It was a very long ride to the grave site. If I were an ice cube she would have melted me with her stare. It was a very cold and hurt stare as if I had taken Darnell from her, when in fact, I did not know she even existed. She kept looking at her engagement ring and looking at my wedding ring. As we were pulling up to the gravesite, Carman pulled the ring off her finger and said, Here, Darnell, I do not need nor want this ring anymore. He took the ring and she began to loudly sob in her boyfriend s arms. As we got in the car to leave the gravesite we saw Darnell s brother and his brother s friends poured some forty ounce liquor out on the gravesite.
