William Segal - A Retrospective Catalog

Thanks to a series of fortuitous circumstances, the Museum of Arts and Sciences presents this retrospective exhibition of the work of William Segal. A native-born son of Macon, his name is little recognized in Macon although his family left an indelible mark in the business and religious life of the community. Achievements at every stage of Segal's life are testament to the exceptional abilities of this man whose parents immigrated to the United States from Romania with little material wealth. In maturity he was recognized for his successes as a publisher and businessman, but he was so much more. The substantial body of his artistic accomplishments is evidence of the passion Segal held for the creative act and the proficiency of the artist's eye and hand. His ability to penetrate the familiarity of things and places, including his own image, reveals a quiet and enduring presence which transforms the overlooked everydayness of life into a luminous presence. The exhibit spans seven decades and includes paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, magazines and artifacts from Segal's life as well as work by his widow Marielle Bancou Segal. The show runs from October 3, 2009 - January 4, 2010.
