This means that if you are a state or municipal employee, you have to start thinking about the possibility that your pension funds are going to be decreased when states get their bankruptcy protection and cities stop writing IOUs to existing pension fund obligations. Thinking outside the box means you will have to find a new way to become relevant in this different economy because this is not going to happen in traditional ways when the phrase “job security” is about to be deleted from the dictionary. Thinking outside of the box means that you will have to divorce the idea of being married to a location or a type of position. For example, the day banks can come up with a mechanical device to greet you and receive deposits and do all the other things that tellers do, tellers will be obsolete in the massive numbers that exist today. Thinking outside of the box means having a repertoire of three or more highly technical complimentary skills so that you will forever be desired financially by others. For example, if you are or want to be an attorney, you need to be a lawyer, a mediator, and a teacher or an accountant. If you are a teacher, you need to be able to teach two or three subjects, have proven disciplinarian skills, and be a private instructor and have some kind of extracurricular skill so that you can be employed by one or more than one type of school.
