Description
Written in an unusual prose form, The Redrocks Chronicles are bawdy, irreverent, outspoken, politically incorrect, and rowdy. Fourteen short stories are found here, and they are all about the borderlands between Texas and Mexico. Redrocks, Texas does not exist, nor do any of the characters in these stories. The author decided to write them after deciding that no one really understands the borderlands, especially people in the world of politics. People who live there might not even know them as well as they think they do, but they at least know more than anyone else. And they are a unique people, these frontierizos (borderlanders), much misunderstood, and perhaps not taken seriously enough. The stories in this book are of course fictitious, but they touch on some very real issues concerning the border region. You will not find any middle ground here because this author has a decided point of view. He doesn't mince words because word economy is at issue here. He tells it like he thinks it is, and he tries to do that with humor in mind. Not all of the stories are humorous, but most of them are. We think the book is easy reading, once you get the hang of how the stories are laid out. This book is about small town America, reglardless of where it's located. The characters you will meet here might remind you of someone in your home town, as well they should. But they are different in that this is the border, and life along the border isn't the same as what you'll find elsewhere. The first story, for instance, is about a man who shows up in Redrocks claiming to be the real Jesus. And he is really Jesus Rodriguez, a preacher with a taste for whiskey and an uncanny ability to preach extremely well. In another story, two poachers get into big trouble illegally fishing in the Rio Grande River. There's also a story of a curandero, a Mexican healer, who tries to cure a man of sexual dysfunction, and with some amazing consequences. And there are stories here of dogs, truck drivers, smugglers, and auto enthusiasts. And there are a few tender stories about people who overcome difficulties to become special in some way. It's action and adventure, and it's funy.
